When Mercury arrives in Aquarius on January 2nd through January 25th, 2022, the intellectual floodgates open. Mercury rules our thinking processes, our mental agility, our communication skills and our decision-making. Aquarius is an intellectual astrology sign – an Air sign that trades in ideas and innovation.

Mercury usually transits a sign for three weeks but this Mercury transit is a little unusual due to Mercury turning retrograde on January 14th. It will then retrograde back into Capricorn on January 25th. Mercury will continue to move backwards through Capricorn until February 3rd when it will turn direct at 24 degrees. Mercury will finally move back into Aquarius on February 14th, 2022.

When Mercury transits Aquarius, then, we think quickly and with some considerable originality – if we’re being kind. Some would say eccentricity or even intellectual perversity.

Mercury in Aquarius transits bring forth ideas which often seem to be light-years ahead of their time.

Because Mercury brings rational, logical energy and Aquarius, in astrology, is quite aloof by nature, there’s not a lot of emotional temperature in this transit. That means it’s a good time for careful, considered action and for reasoning through a difficult situation without allowing emotion to get in the way.

On the other hand, it also makes this period somewhat cold and even distant. Aquarius is a humanitarian Sun sign, and this transit brings plenty of sympathy for others – but the lack of feelings means a lack of empathy. Sympathy and empathy are very different beasts.

When Mercury transits Aquarius, we don’t want to be told what to think, so standoffs with authority are frequent. However, many of us do become rather skilled at telling others what to think during this transit, so it’s a prime time for intellectual debates. Aquarius is fixed energy in astrology, so when this is applied to the intellectual sphere, we can become very dogmatic and inflexible in our views. It helps to remember that one’s own opinion is not the only valid one.

Communication when Mercury transits Aquarius is generally clear but clipped. Brief posts, texts and tweets are efficient, but devoid of emotion – which makes it hard for others to judge the tone of any communication. This can lead to misunderstandings, not about the facts in question, but about the sender’s intentions. Face to face communication fares better, but do be careful with social media.

Mercury in Aquarius for an Aries (Aries dates: March 20 – April 19)

Conversation flows freely during this Mercury transit, Aries, but be sure you’re allowing others time and space to talk rather than forcing them to listen to you. Get your innovative ideas in front of an appreciative audience.

Mercury in Aquarius for a Taurus (Taurus dates: April 20 – May 20)

Develop your career strategy now by taking a long-term view of where you want to head. It’s a good time for self-promotion and job interviews, Taurus, and an excellent time if you work in sales or marketing.

Mercury in Aquarius for a Gemini (Gemini dates: May 21 – June 20)

Don’t be surprised if you’re quite forgetful during this Mercury transit, Gemini. Your mind is firmly on the bigger picture and you have a strong vision, but that means you’re neglecting some of the details.

Mercury in Aquarius for a Cancer (Cancer dates: June 21 – July 21)

You can read people like a book during this Mercury transit, Cancer. That’s a mixed blessing, however, as it means you can tell who isn’t on your side as well as who is. Better you know than you don’t know – perhaps?

Mercury in Aquarius for a Leo (Leo dates: July 22 – August 21)

Negotiation is your strong point while Mercury transits your interpersonal zone. This works well for you in business, Leo, but also in your personal life, where give and take between you and your lover should improve.

Mercury in Aquarius for a Virgo (Virgo dates: August 22 – September 21)

Get busy with leftover jobs so that you can clear your desk and prepare for a fresh start, Virgo. It’s a good time to tie up loose ends or to revisit a project you previously abandoned. Your level of focus is excellent.

Mercury in Aquarius for a Libra (Libra dates: September 22 – October 22)

You may be feeling unusually competitive during this Mercury transit, Libra, especially at work. Showcase your talents, and let your imagination and creativity speak for themselves. It’s a fun time for a party as you’re feeling sociable.

Mercury in Aquarius for a Scorpio (Scorpio dates: October 23 – November 21)

Deal with difficult family matters now, Scorpio, because you’ll be able to think logically and unemotionally. It’s a busy time at home, with lots of entertaining, errands and perhaps some home reorganization.

Mercury in Aquarius for a Sagittarius (Sagittarius dates: November 22 – December 20)

Spend time away from your devices if you want to avoid information overload. Switch off and get out into the fresh air for a personal reboot. Your communication skills are strong now, Sagittarius, but social media can be deceptive.

Mercury in Aquarius for a Capricorn (Capricorn dates: December 21 – January 18)

Think about how you could put your under-used talents to good financial use. This is an excellent transit for starting a new business or a side hustle, Capricorn. Nip excess worry and stress in the bud through guided meditation sessions.

Mercury in Aquarius for an Aquarius (Aquarius dates: January 19 – February 17)

Stave off boredom by taking up some new hobbies. You need lots of variety in your life just now, and you’ll feel competitive and argumentative, which makes it a good time to campaign for a good cause or even a political one.

Mercury in Aquarius for a Pisces (Pisces dates: February 18 – March 19)

Avoid making yourself feel guilty during this Mercury transit, Pisces. Spending too much time dwelling on the past is counterproductive. Expand your social circle and enjoy some good company so that you don’t feel isolated.
